FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., -- Dec. 15, 2002 – You wouldn’t know it by looking at her, but Trish Stratus wrestled at Armageddon with a broken nose.
An in-ring mishap during a non-televised live event on Saturday sent Trish to the hospital for medical attention. “It was a simple thing,” Trish told WWE.com. “We did a rollup, and my opponent fell on my face by accident with her entire body. It was bleeding and it puffed up real fast so we went and got some (X-rays) of it, and I was diagnosed with an non-displaced fracture. So it has a fracture in it but it didn’t move.”
Unbelievably, Trish was her usual happy self backstage today, and her face remained free of bruises and swelling. “Coming here today, everyone’s like, ‘Oh my God! I heard you broke your nose,’” she said. “Then they look at it and it’s almost like a big disappointment. I almost want to doctor it up a little bit so people will say, ‘Ooh!’”
There would be no lucky break for the blonde Diva in her Triple Threat Match, as Victoria successfully defended her WWE Women’s Championship against Trish and Jacqueline. After the match, Victoria said she was in good health, despite taking what looked like a bad fall following a tilt-a-whirl slam. “That’s what everybody said, but I didn’t feel it at all,” Victoria said. “The adrenaline was running. I’ll probably be sore tomorrow, as usual.”
Trish thought the match was a good one, although a bit on the short side. “I thought it would be so wonderful if we could have more time,” Trish said. “I thought we painted the right picture that the three of us at anytime can win. So that was good. It would be nice to not throw away the last move and take our time to tell a little bit of a better story.”
Jackie, however, enjoyed the flow of the event, which accentuated her recent return to the hunt for the Women’s Championship. “It was a fast-paced, action-packed wrestling match between three of the top Divas in WWE today,” she said. “I’m happy to be back in the ring. I feel I can do it all; referee, manage, wrestle. But I like to wrestle. Hopefully I can get to do it some more.”
Having three competitors in the ring at one time presented a challenge for Victoria. “I thought we all put a lot of effort into it,” she said. “We’re all pretty good competitors, but Triple Threat is not my forte. It’s very new to me, so I’m not comfortable with a Triple Threat. I guess it’s going to take a while. I’m still pretty green (inexperienced) in the business.
I’m still learning. I always think I can do better. I’m very, very self-critical. I need to get out of that habit.”
One thing Victoria (whose real name is Lisa Marie Varon) is definitely pleased with, however, is the development of her persona. “I love my character,” she said. “It’s weird how natural I play it even though it’s very opposite of my real life. It’s kind of scary. Maybe it’s inside demons coming out. I love it. Right before I go out, I kind of become my character. Lisa Marie does not exist out there. It’s pretty scary. I just become a psycho bitch! I get so involved, I need to watch what I say out there. I’m so over the top anyway. I kind of have to tone it down sometimes. I’m lucky I got this. I think my mannerisms are very psychotic in the ring, and I think that’s kind of how I got this character.”
Although it was a bit shorter than she would have liked, Trish sees the match at Armageddon as a sign that good things are in store for the women. “Our timing with one another is getting a lot better,” Trish said. “We’re getting more opportunities to work together. The timing is there, the chemistry is there, and now we’re developing great characters too. That just makes for better matches. All our stories should culminate in the ring. I think with the in-ring work and our characters, we have some really good stories to tell.”
