OK then MRS. imnotsaying....here you go. Short version....we humans have an innate inability to discern between pleasure and pain. Nothing hurts forever and nothing remains pleasurable forever. It is, though, the pursuit of infinite, neverending pleasure (call it what you want...happiness, joy, bliss, satisfaction, comfortability, etc.) that makes us what we are. Without pain and hurt, we could never appreciate love and pleasure. Now, my question is..."Do you want to hear the long version now?" Best regards, Mr. Fossil yes sir!!!!!! ;D

OK then. Here is the abbreviated version of the long version answer to the question.
I will use a sequence of observations to help clarify my shortened version.
-if we did't care so much, it wouldn't hurt so bad -law of physics..."...for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction..." also applies to human emotions? ponder that one! -pain and pleasure are the same being, but dressed (or disguised) differently -when one immerses ones self into someone else so completely the tendency is to have fluctuations in buoyancy....sometimes you float slightly higher (happiness, pleasure), sometimes you sink lower (hurt, depression, anger, disappointment), and sometimes you remain at the same level (comfortability, compatability, "same old same old")....yet one thing remains constant....CHANGE! -one can never understand the awesomeness of happiness without experiencing the depths of despair
All of these observations could serve to give you different perspectives regarding your question. Let me say that every year I've lived I seem to get a bit wiser. My theory is that by continuing to screw up I narrow the list of those things I can do to screw up. Hopefully, before I die I will have exhausted that list.
I know I'm a lot more content (i.e. happy, on an even keel, less likely to stress out over things, more trusting in my relationships with others, etc.) at 40+ than I was at 29.
I now have a question for you. When fossils get older and begin their inevitable biological breakdown, is the byproduct crap? Think about it. ;D
