Recap By: George Farmer of NoHoldsBarredWrestling.com
This week, Mean Gene Okerlund joined the No Holds Barred radio show and here are the highlights.
He mentioned he has enjoyed over 30 years in the business and has seen many different eras in wrestling, from Bobby Heenan to Vince McMahon and Hulk Hogan to Roddy Piper and Randy Savage to Brock Lesnar and Kurt Angle.
He is happy with his role in WWE hosting Confidential. It is not official yet but Gene hopes to land a more involved role backstage as a interviewer. He does know the days of the old school interviews are gone as most of today's promos are scripted. He loves the concept of Confidential. He feels it covers the meat and potatoe stories of the business. He listed the Shawn Michaels and Steve Austin stories as prime examples. He feels the show puts the camera on themselves and digs in backstage where other shows do not.
Gene mentioned the Raw anniversary show and Bobby Heenan not attending because he could not be 100% healthy. He said the Brain might be back as some higher powers in WWE want to see it. He called Bobby a treasure and he respects him in all aspects of the business.
Gene gave some memories of the men he interviewed over the years. He called Tony Atlas the worst interview ever. He said some in the business could not put two words together. He listed Ric Flair as his most favorite talent to interview.
He talked about the demise of WCW, listing the large salaries, the inmates running the asylum and Vince Russo as the main reasons. He called Russo a piece of crap and said he was only good when Vince McMahon had control over Russo's powers.
He said the segment between he and Eric Bischoff talking about a possible Nitro reunion if Eric didn't screw it up was a shoot. He said Vince stood the test of time where Bischoff did not. He talked about this Monday's Raw and he can't wait to see what happens to Eric as a lot of people hope he gets the boot.
He talked about the great shock he felt the night Hulk Hogan turned heel with the NWO. He said he almost soiled himself. He felt like the NWO became the company as they had all the talent. It wasn't WCW versus NWO, it was all NWO.
He closed by saying how much fun he had teaming with Hulk Hogan. He mentioned his great friendships with Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan and Alfred Hayes. Then, he said it was time to go out for cocktails.
