Bret Hart OTR inteview recap
by Mike Chisholm
Hey hey…here is the recap of Bret on OTR
Show starts out with Bret talking about the limitations on him after his stroke. He said that right after the stroke all he felt was the tips of his fingers. He said he was in denial for 4 days that he even had a stroke, and he thought he was going to walk out of the hospital. Landsberg mentioned how good Bret looked and the fact that he was walking unassisted. Bret agreed, and said that he was given no promises on how far he would ever come, and he is thankful for the Dr’s and nurses of the hospitals he has been to. He said that when he was on his bike, he was riding down town to check out the UN summit because he had been invited to dinner with the head of the UN. He was on top of the world when this happened. He then went into the darkness of his depression that set in after the shock of the stroke wore off. Landsberg asked if it helped or hurt Bret that he was an athlete that was used to working with pain to get through it, and he said, not at first, because of all the muscle on his body acted as a real hindrance to his recovery. However, once he started to make progress, it was a good thing because he knows what it is like to work hard in hard situations, and that really helped him once he had made his first steps.

They got back and started talking about life after the stroke. He asked Bret about the changes he had to make in his life. Bret said he had a hard time not being bitter. He said there were a lot of little things that he would try to get back, like winking, or putting the sun visor down in the car, and each of these things were a big deal to do again. Landsberg asked who was there for Bret when this happened. He said first and foremost, his family. Wife and Children. Second, Walter Gretzky (Wayne’s dad. He went through something similar I think about 10 years ago) was there for him. He probably doesn’t even know how much of a help he was. As for wrestlers, Benoit, Jericho, Piper, Taker, and Edge were all there for him but that was about it. He said that since Owens’s death a lot of the wrestlers avoided him anyway because of discomfort. Diana, Ellie and a few others he has just closed the door on since this happened. They go to commercial saying they will talk about Vince when they get back.
Commercial
They talk about survivor series a little bit. Landsberg asks ‘Do you hate Vince?’ Bret responded: Hate? No, I have moved on. I don’t forgive what he did. It wasn’t just about business. It was terrible. It was about dishonesty. But when he had his stroke, Vince called in the first day or so, and was very nice. He then goes into his coffee table book that is being produced, and the fact he has no pictures or footage he is allowed to use for it. He said that Vince had broken promises in the past to free this footage (at Owens funeral) and they talked about that. Vince, without even pausing, said okay, it’s all yours and Bret said that was a nice gesture. He then went into the fact that no one will ever know what happened to Owen because it never went to trial, and the WWE had sealed the box on that one. But he said that Vince offered the olive branch and he took it. Bret said he needs closure, and that he doesn’t want to screw up the chances of his younger family ever working for Vince. (He mentioned Ted and Harry by name) Landsberg asks, would you keep your kids away from Wrestling? Bret’s response: Yeah, I suppose although he would rather them be wrestlers than drywallers, nothing against drywallers. He said that wrestling was good to him for the most part.
Commercial
Landsberg puts Bret over saying he helped build the show and its fan base, and it is very very special that Bret would take the time and effort to be on the show and thanks him. Hart said no one was happier to be there than him. They spoke about the meeting with Vince in Florida. Hart said he wanted to make sure Vince knew that it wasn’t Bret making the huge Owen lawsuit move forward. He said Vince gave him a big hug, and they talked about the DVD, and that it was on the drawing board. Landsberg asked if he would ever come back, and he said not a chance. He then asked Bret if it was just one last time to say good bye, and Bret said, yes, but there would have to be the audience for it. They then spoke on Curt Henning. Bret said he is devastated. Curt was one of his favorite people in the world. He was Bret’s favorite wrestler. He puts over how Curt put Bret over in the first place. How he wrestled at summerslam with a terrible back injury to give Bret the I/C belt, and how amazing he was and the integrity he had.
They plugged next week, and that was it. Easily the fastest half hour I have experienced in a long while
